Forthepastthreemillionyears,Earth'sclimatehaswobbledthroughdozensoficeages,withthickicesheetsgrowing
from
thepolesandthenshrinkingbackagain.Theseiceagesusedtolastroughly41,000years.Butinthepasthalfamillionyears,thesebigfreezeseachstretchedtoaboutahundredthousandyearslong.Meanwhile,thetemperatureswingsduringandbetweentheseiceagesbecamemoreextreme,soaringtonewhighsandlows.Theseextremeclimateswingsdon'tappeartobeeasinganytimesoon,accordingtoevidencerecordedinEarth'srocks,Crowleysaid."Thelatesttwoglaciationsweretwoofthebiggestwe'veseen."
